
What is a Magnetic Level Indicator? How Does It Work?
Magnetic level indicators are highly reliable measurement devices designed to monitor the liquid level in tanks. They can be installed using various connection types, depending on the application requirements.
These devices operate based on the principle of communicating vessels. As the liquid level in the tank rises or falls, a float inside the bypass tube moves correspondingly. The float contains a permanent magnet, which interacts with bicolor magnetic flaps arranged along the outside of the bypass tube within an aluminum profile.
As the float moves:
- The flaps turn red when the float rises,
- And white when the float falls.
This flip action provides a clear, highly visible, and accurate indication of the liquid level in the tank.
Integration with Automation Systems
Magnetic level indicators are not limited to visual monitoring—they can also be integrated into automation systems.
- With a graduated scale, the liquid level can be read in units such as length (cm/mm) or volume (liters/m³).
- Using limit switches (contacts), the system can control devices such as pumps or solenoid valves.
- When equipped with a reed switch assembly and a digital control panel, the level data can be transmitted to PLC, SCADA, or other automation platforms.
